A theme is the general design of your WordPress website and installing a theme on your website is very easy to do. There are two options for you to do this. The first is from the theme store, embedded within your WordPress dashboard. The second option is manually using a zip file.

Installing From The Store

The easiest option to adding a theme to your WordPress website is to use the theme store from your Dashboard. The themes here are free, though some will have premium options that you can upgrade later, if you would like to.

Step 1 – Visit Themes

Visit the theme store page by going to ‘Appearance’ and then ‘Themes’ in your WordPress admin area. You can then select the ‘Add New’ button at the top of the page.

Step 2 – Search For A Theme

Now using the search option in the top right corner, enter in the name of the theme (if you know it) or feature you want to install (e.g. eCommerce). Then you will see a list of the most relevant themes for your store.

Step 3 – Pick Your Theme

Find the theme from the search results that you like the look of the most. Then click on the ‘Install Now’ option. WordPress will automatically install the theme for you. Once installed on your WordPress website you can click on the ‘Activate’ button to start using it.

Installing It Manually

Next you can install a theme manually using a zip file.

Step 1 – Visit Themes

Visit the theme store page by going to ‘Appearance’ and then ‘Themes’ in your WordPress admin area. You can then select the ‘Add New’ button at the top of the page.

Step 2 – Upload Plugin

Next click on the ‘Upload Theme’ option at the top of the page. You will then be taken to a page where you need to click on the ‘Choose File’ option and then find and upload the theme from your desktop computer.

Step 3 – Install

Once you’ve gone back to the ‘Upload Theme’ screen you can click on the ‘Install Now’ option. This will install the theme and then you can activate the theme on the ‘Themes’ page in the ‘Appearance’ area of your website.
