What migrates from WordPress to Shopify, and what doesn't
A WordPress to Shopify migration is really three separate jobs, and only one of them can be fully automated. Knowing which is which before you start is the difference between a weekend project and a month of surprises.
Your products, customers and orders
Store data moves well. Shopify's own free Store Migration app imports WooCommerce products and customers. Orders, reviews, coupons, blog posts and pages need a paid migration tool or a spreadsheet import. Products with four or more variant options are the usual problem: Shopify's free importer brings them in without their variants, so check those by hand.
Your design
WordPress themes and Shopify themes are built on different systems, so no tool copies a design across. What you can carry over is the brand: logo, colours, fonts and the order of the sections on your key pages. The checker above pulls those from your site so you can set them up in a Shopify theme in an afternoon. If your pages were built with Elementor, Divi or WPBakery, plan to rebuild them with Shopify's section editor.
Your plugins
No WordPress plugin runs on Shopify. Each one is replaced in one of four ways, and the checker sorts every plugin it finds into these groups:
- Built into Shopify: SEO fields, sitemaps, sliders, contact forms, discounts, payments and analytics.
- Needs an app: reviews, wishlists, bookings, translation, live chat and email marketing.
- Not needed: caching, security and speed plugins, because Shopify runs the hosting.
- No real equivalent: forums, full course platforms, display ads and affiliate link tools.
How to migrate WooCommerce to Shopify, step by step
- Run the checker and save the redirect file.
- Open a Shopify trial and pick a theme close to your current layout. Set your logo, colours and fonts.
- Import your data with Shopify's free Store Migration app, a spreadsheet tool or a migration service.
- Install the apps that replace your plugins, and rebuild any custom pages.
- Test a real order from start to finish, including emails and shipping rates.
- Upload your redirects, then point your domain at Shopify. Keep the WordPress site running until the switch.
Keep your Google rankings with redirects
Shopify uses fixed address patterns: products live under /products/, categories under
/collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under
/blogs/news/. Your WordPress addresses almost never match, so every page Google has
indexed breaks on launch day unless it redirects. The checker reads your sitemap and builds the full
list in the format Shopify's redirect import expects.
Not sure which plugins your site depends on? Scan WP's theme and plugin detector lists them from the outside, and the server speed test shows how fast your current hosting answers, a useful number to compare once you're on Shopify.
Questions about migrating from WordPress to Shopify
Can I migrate from WordPress to Shopify for free?
Partly. Shopify's Store Migration app is free and moves products and customers. Orders, reviews and blog content need a paid tool or a manual import, and Shopify itself is a paid plan after the trial.
Will I lose my SEO if I migrate to Shopify?
Not if every old address redirects to its new one. Rankings drop when old links return errors. Upload the redirect file before you switch your domain, then test a handful of old addresses by hand.
Can I keep my WordPress blog?
Yes. Some stores move the blog into Shopify's built-in blog; others keep WordPress on a subdomain or subfolder and move only the shop. The second option keeps every post and plugin exactly as it is.
How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?
A small store with a few hundred products can move in a few days. Most of the time goes on the design, replacing plugins and testing, not on moving the data.
Do my WooCommerce reviews move to Shopify?
Not with Shopify's free importer. Review apps such as Judge.me can import them, and paid migration services move them as part of the job.
